Objective To investigate the prevalence of high-normal blood pressure and analyze its influencing factors among higher vocational medical students. Methods By convenience sampling method, 1240 higher vocational medical students from Guangxi Health Vocational College were enrolled as research subjects. Relevant indicator data were collected through physical examination and body composition measurement. According to office blood pressure levels, research subjects were divided into a normal blood pressure group, a high-normal blood pressure group, or a hypertension group; the hypertension group was excluded from influencing factor analysis. LASSO regression was used to screen independent variables from variables with statistically significant differences in univariate analysis, and a binary logistic regression model was further constructed to identify independent influencing factors for high-normal blood pressure. Results The detection rate of high-normal blood pressure among higher vocational medical students was 40.89% (507/1240), and the detection rate in males (55.95%, 207/370) was higher than that in females (34.48%, 300/870) (P<0.05). After excluding the 62 patients with hypertension, univariate analysis showed statistically significant differences between the high-normal blood pressure group and the normal blood pressure group in gender, body mass index (BMI), heart rate, body water, minerals, muscle mass, basal metabolic rate, body fat percentage, fat mass, protein, and visceral fat grade (all P<0.05). After variable screening by LASSO regression and confounding factor adjustment via binary logistic regression, gender, heart rate, and BMI were identified as independent influencing factors for high-normal blood pressure in higher vocational medical students (all P<0.05). Specifically, males had a 2.703-fold higher risk of high-normal blood pressure than females (OR=2.703, 95%CI: 1.937-3.773); each 1 kg/m2 increment in BMI corresponded to a 12.5% increase in the risk of high-normal blood pressure (OR=1.125, 95%CI: 1.059-1.195); each 1 beat/min increment in heart rate corresponded to a 2.0% increase in the risk of high-normal blood pressure (OR=1.020, 95%CI: 1.010-1.030). Conclusion The prevalence of high-normal blood pressure is relatively high among higher vocational medical students, and male gender, elevated BMI, and higher heart rate are its independent risk factors. Campus-based health management should seize the critical intervention window of high-normal blood pressure and implement stratified interventions for this population so as to delay the progression toward hypertension.
