Objective To observe the clinical efficacy of Shenshan Bashi Decoction combined with Western medicine in treating acute gouty arthritis (AGA) of dampness-heat accumulation type. Methods Ninety patients with AGA of dampness-heat accumulation type were randomly divided into an observation group or a control group, with 45 patients in each group. The control group received Western medicine treatment (Febuxostat tablets + Celecoxib capsules), based on which the observation group received Shenshan Bashi Decoction additionally. Both groups were treated continuously for 14 days. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome scores, laboratory indicators (erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and serum uric acid), joint pain level (visual analogue scale [VAS] score), joint function (Oswestry Disability Index [ODI]), and cumulative number of gout attacks before and after treatment, as well as clinical efficacy, were compared between the two groups. Results After 14 days of treatment, the total effective rate in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (97.78% vs. 80.00%, P<0.05); compared with the control group, the observation group had lower levels of erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and serum uric acid, as well as lower scores for joint pain, joint swelling, restricted flexion and extension, total TCM syndrome score, VAS score, ODI, and a lower cumulative number of gout attacks (all P<0.05). Conclusion Shenshan Bashi Decoction combined with Western medicine is significantly effective in treating AGA of dampness-heat accumulation type, alleviating inflammatory response, and improving TCM symptoms.
